If you are curious about what is important to your fat loss success, this blog post, "3 Keys to Fat Loss" is going to go a long way to answer some of your questions. It might even go against some fat loss ideas that you have been believing up to this point in your life.
I think one of the biggest problems with many folks fat loss efforts is incomplete or inaccurate information that does not help them towards your health and fitness goals. And in this area and what I am reviewing today, there is too much contradictory information particularly among the fads diets and the getting healthy and fit lifestyle movement.
Yesterday I set up a weight training program for a health and fitness newbie. As I was setting up her program and showing her how to do stuff and creating a workable plan for her I also shared the information I am sharing here with you today and her response was DENIAL and NO WAY and REALLY?
Why did she respond this way? Because she believed, like I believed way in the past and like many now believe that cardio and reducing cals down to next to nothing (or lower than is needed by your body for daily function or RMR) is how we get smaller. Nothing about healthier and fitter and really not too much about weight training either. She was only weight training because her girlfriend, an old client of mine, had lost over 15olbs through doing it so she got to thinking maybe, maybe I should try this too lol.
3 Keys to Fat Loss
1. Nutrition - the foods we eat and what we drink
Yes you read that right, nutrition. What you feed your body. When you feed your body. How much you feed your body.
We literally are what we eat and drink. If we decide to follow some 500 cals weight loss program for a period of time (or any program that takes our calories below our RMR), biologically and metabolically we set into motion not so helpful results that effect our metabolisms and sometimes effect our metabolisms for a long time into the future. Even more so if we have been doing this on and off for years. Not to our advantage at all if we are trying to get and live healthy and fit.
I know for me, in the past up to 30 years old, I firmly believed that reducing calories and exercising was the way to go EVEN THOUGH IT NEVER REALLY WORKED FOR ME. At least, not once I started to eat regular again which, as you know, is sorta important to our survival.
We gotta eat for our health and for energy and for our bodies to carry us through this life here on earth. And WHAT we eat as far as nutritional value is very important too as nowadays MANY of the foods you find in grocery stores and fast food restaurants is NOT FOOD. What I mean when I say it IS NOT FOOD is that it has NO NUTRITIONAL VALUE for you eating it. It does not do what real food does for you. It is just empty calories. So not necessary for our survival.
Not only is nutrition important to living a healthy and fit life but it is THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP. More important than the next 2 although some DO NOT BELIEVE THIS.
Like for example, your body requires macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates and fats) and micronutrients (vits and minerals) to run all day, everyday repairing and doing. If you do not bring these nutrients into your body system and then you go exercise doing running, kickboxing, Zumba or even weight training which all require some rest and repair, what is our body to use to repair and rest and heal? If you don't have the nutrients coming in via FOOD then .... hmmmmm
Big problem that cause many health problems down the road.
SO fueling your body is HIGH PRIORITY. First priority. If you don't know how to do that then LEARN!
2. Weight training
I put weight training BEFORE cardiovascular exercise because it also is exercise and it has benefits that cardio does not have and you can do it 2-3 times a week for incredible health benefits.
If you are woman and you don't want jiggle and you want to maintain strength and keep your metabolism stoking along then you MUST WEIGHT TRAIN. Yes men too should weight train regularly even if you have never done so before.
Personally, I love to weight train much more than I like cardio and I do because I understand the benefits of weight training regularly. Which, by the way, is not to BULK up and look like a man. Mostly because it keeps things from heading south now that I am getting older and it keeps me strong enough to push my cart through Sam's Club lol. OK and for many more benefits click link below.
3. Cardiovascular Exercise
Or running, biking, swimming, Zumba, Kickboxing, or really any activity that increases your heart rate while moving your body.
Cardio is AWESOME for you but as a FAT LOSS tool it falls to 3rd place in importance. I know, I know you might be thinking HUH?
But, but how can that be? Well because even though just about every DIET program out there or get fit program you hear about, read about, see on TV or Facebook or wherever, is always on the program being sold and that program usually is an exercise class/dvd/program that yes is good for you if, IF you are fueling your body properly with healthy, real food and are weight training for the advantages to weight loss by doing so.
Cardio for most folks into health and fitness is just a finish to ALL other things that are more important. Yes I know, some folks ONLY cardio and while our bodies require movement and I tend to think all movement is good, we still gotta FEED that movement the nutrients our bodies require.
Ye,s you also might do cardio 3 times more than weight training but, still, in my book, cardio is last place for importance in this list today. But keep doing your cardio exercises as there a plenty of benefits from doing so.
Often times when I first start to work with a new client, one of the first things I tell them is to FORGET what they think they know already about getting healthy and fit. Start fresh. Keep and open mind and research. With the internet nowadays the information is literally right at our fingertips.
