What is in our beef?

What is in our beef?

Do you know what is in our beef?

While reading the WSJ yesterday I came across this article:

As I am reading this article I am thinking, BLOG POST, just because this is stuff we should know. It is really important to our health to know what IS IN THE FOOD WE ARE EATING seeing as we literally are WHAT WE EAT.

I know, we go to the grocery store and we just buy these products and assume that what is sold there is OK for us but, but .... I think maybe we need to look at this a little closer.

Like take this article here, above, it states that our cattle in this country is ill. How? Here is what it says and I quote:

"A growing number of cattle arriving for slaughter at US meatpacking plants have recently shown unusual signs of distress. Some walked stiffly, while others had trouble moving. A few even sat down in strange positions, looking more like dogs than cows."

Maybe you are saying, but what is the big deal? Well, the big deal is that cattle does not act that way when healthy. They normally run and jump, not sit like dogs and have trouble moving.

So Tyson food suspended animal feed that has the additive Zilmax in it as the industry scientists believe that the additive in the cows feed is the current problem with the cows. Yes, this additive is the reason why the cows are now sick.

Yep, so do we really know what is in our beef?

Hmmmm In reading more in the article, guess who makes the additive? Hooo Hooo it lists two pharmaceutical companies: Merck & Co and Eli Lilly & Co... wow just WOW.

So while reading this I am thinking, "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?" Really, the drug companies are making the additives for our cow feed? Yes, from their animal health unit which is involved in fattening the cows up and preventing them from getting sick. Hmmmm Apparently a relatively new venture and yes, approved by the FDA.

Possibly another questionable FDA approval I would say.

Some of you might be reading this and thinking, how did she not know this or maybe you did not know this, but I will tell you, I want to know what the heck the pharmaceutical companies are doing in our food supply. It is bad enough that any time anyone turns on the TV or opens a magazine we get bombarded with pharmaceutical ads and ALL THEIR SUPPOSED benefits. All FDA approved.

I don't know folks, but I truly think we need to pay better attention, first we have all these Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO's) that some peeps still think is OK which is VERY QUESTIONABLE and the fake chicken and now OUR BEEF.

DO we really know what is in our beef?

We have choices and we decide what we buy in the grocery store. Maye we need to start voting with our pocketbook and saying NO to this crap food the drug companies want us to swallow. Just a thought.

What do YOU think about all this? Do you think this is important to know? How are you going to respond to the knowledge? More research or ...

  1. Oh, it’s SO important to know. I don’t eat meat. I chose a vegetarian diet. I chose it because that’s what my body wants, but I’ve since learned things like this and I won’t ever go back to eating meat.

  2. Wow! Thanks for sharing. We are what we eat & therefore should pay close attention to what goes in our mouth. I believe one of the reasons we are not as healthy as in past years, is the quality of our food has drastically been reduced.

    • I agree Sharron, maybe all these different illnesses and cancers can be explained by some of what can be passed off as FOOD. Thanks for stopping by.

  3. It’s very upsetting to hear what is in our meat, and other foods. I still eat meat, and I don’t plan to stop. I did find out there is a farm in my area that sells meats to the public. I haven’t checked it out yet, but my plan is to start buying from a local farm rather than the grocery store. There are so many people that don’t realize what is in their meat. You would think it would be more widespread, but some people just don’t take the time to research it. Or worse, they don’t care.

  4. HI Evey,

I do not eat beef other than grass-fed ‘once in a blue moon’. I don’t enjoy it–never really have. Although I am not vegetarian, I rarely eat meat at all lately. Changing taste buds I suppose.

  5. I do eat meat but try to buy locally fed and raised beef. The problem starts in the soil I bleieve – we have such poor quality soil now generally that it produces poor quality food – you rarely see farmers feeds sitting empty now like they used to years ago. We have leeched all the goodness form the soil.

If only organic food was affordable for more people we could all eat better.

    • Lorraine, locally fed and raised is the way to go. Organics or growing own costs time and money and maybe not all fruits and veggies need to be bought organic.
      Thanks for stopping by.

  6. I find it quite frightening to discover just how much our food has been “modified” these days. We need to be so careful and keep aourselves aware of the dangers of eating thiese types of foods. It used to just be the pre packaged things, like ready meals, that we needed to avoid. Now it’s even the basic things like meat!
