Black Bean Burger

OK, so awhile back I was looking around and debating what I was going to cook today for Recipe Friday and well a good friend of mine and a participator in my OLD Strength and Conditioning Class, yep, Donna Simms suggested a simple, easy and quick veggie burger.

Now I don't know if she will consider this Black Bean Burger a veggie burger but I do. lol Well Donna? I know I have convinced you that the store bought veggie burgers just will NOT cut it any more so how about this one instead?

All right, so I found it.

YES the short ingredient list of stuff I already have in the food pantry, 10 min prep time and 10 min cook time and I just couldn't say NO. Here is the website that supplied this wonderful, quick, easy veggie recipe

Black Bean Burgers

  • 1/2 onion, diced
  • 1 can black beans, well drained
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 2 slices bread, crumbled
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp seasoned salt
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • oil for frying
Sautee the onions till soft, about 3-5 minutes.In a large bowl, mash the beans until almost smooth. Add sauteed onions and the rest of the ingredients, except the oil, adding the flour a few tablespoons at a time to combine well. Mixture will be thick.
Form bean mixture into patties, approximately ½ inch thick and fry patties in a small amount of oil until slightly firm. Make veggie burgers and enjoy!

So here is the deal with this recipe.

First I will confess that this recipe is way out of my comfort zone.

I rarely, and I mean rarely eat beans of any kind.

Lately with this blog site I have been stepping out a bit and trying new and way different meals. And if I am trying them then so is my family 🙂 Sometimes this is good news for them and sometimes NOT!

Today was a NOT for the kids. Lynn, my husband and I LOVED these, the kids, not so much. Although I am convinced as soon as I put these in a bun and throw some Ketchup on them will they really know? We will see... No bun or ketchup for me and the hubs though!

Will I cook them again?

YES. First in my book these burgers are a complete meal.

If you look at the recipe it has bread and flour in it. You can use any bread and I would recommend better quality breads like RYE or Sourdough or Ezekiel bread or even bread crumbs. Can use any kind of flour like wheat or whatever you have on hand. I used white flour. YES I admit it. lol

Listen I am just following the recipe. And it is not that unhealthy if compared to ANY KIND of veggie burger you take out of the freezer at your local Grocery Store. I didn't put any preservatives or chemicals in the ones I made. SEE?

Second, this is an inexpensive meal.

Just a few ingredients that most folks will already have on hand and not expensive. Beans are a good, healthy alternative protein that personally I have slacked on utilizing. NOT any more.

Now reading some of the comments folks posted at the website it seems that many folks mix and match ingredients to make different versions and also like to put this on a bun with maybe lettuce, tomato and condiments. Personally I LOVED them straight up. Just as they came out of the frying pan. YES you do FRY them. I used Coconut Oil as that is a better oil with high temperature cooking. Plus it tastes GREAT!
